Demanding and rewarding
RIO GRANDE - MACHUCA
After breakfast, a short visit to the village is followed by the Penaliri trail along the Rio Grande.
While the start is fairly flat, the rest of the route becomes steeper, and along the way you come across viscachas, Caracara eagles and several enclosures where the goats gather for the night. These enclosures, guarded by valiant shepherd dogs, overlook the river.
The route becomes very sporty and demanding as the slope is steep to reach the ridges, then descend again and start again until you reach the Machuca “bofedal” (high altitude wetland) where the llamas graze.
You spend the night in a community lodge, an authentic construction of volcanic lava stone, at an altitude of 4,042 m.
INCLUDED :
Walking rations, snacks, sandwiches and drinks.
Evening meal and breakfast.
